Our four year BSc Computer Science Honours degree with a specialism in Artificial Intelligence is oriented to providing computer science students with the latest techniques in Artificial Intelligence. We aim to teach people not just how to deploy cutting edge tools and techniques, but how to build the next generation of software tools that others will use. This programme aims to give a well-integrated balance of theoretical underpinnings and practical ai engineering degree experience, strongly informed by the research expertise of our academic staff. The first year will follow the common curriculum of core courses delivered to all engineering programmes (such as mathematics, dynamics, materials and thermodynamics), along with specialised courses in electronics, manufacturing and engineering skills. These provide the foundation for the study in robotics and artificial intelligence in the years to follow.

The module follows one of the two main methodologies for dealing with the phenomena of Artificial Intelligence in computer science, known as “semiotic”, “symbolic” or “logical” paradigm. In this approach, the intelligent behaviour is achieved by incorporating common sense, heuristic and expert rules of behaviour which control the programmed algorithms for information processing during their execution in real time. All three artificial intelligence fundamental modules will be assessed by combining coursework (60%) and exams (40%).

Various probability models, including normal and binomial distributions, sampling and inference and predictive techniques are introduced. The University of Nottingham has a long tradition of AI teaching and offers both undergraduate and master’s degree programmes, which draw on a wide range of specialist AI courses across the AI curriculum. We have also funded postgraduate (inter/multidisciplinary) research opportunities on AI and AI-related topics and excel in training the next generation of AI experts and academics through  integrated research and doctoral training programmes. These skills are exercised in an industrial project run using the IXN framework, working with real clients from external bodies (including charities, healthcare providers and others as well as industry and those elsewhere in academia). The individual project gives students the opportunity to gain both detailed knowledge and practical experience in a more focussed area than generally possible elsewhere in their degree programme.
